5/28/2023 0 Comments Diseases In Wax by Thomas Schnalke![]() ![]() The anatomical pictures of Vesalius were followed by those of Johann Vesling ("Veslingius") and Hieronymus Fabricius. These pictures greatly influenced the creation of future anatomical wax models. The book included drawings of human females and males with their skins dissected. In 1543 Vesalius wrote an anatomical masterwork named in Latin De humani corporis fabrica libri septem ("On the fabric of the human body in seven books"), or in short De Fabrica. At age 25 Vesalius realized that the anatomical knowledge of Galen was derived from animal anatomy and therefore Galen had never dissected a human body. Galen wrote that the bone of the arm is the longest bone in the human body, but Vesalius found that the bone of the thigh is actually the longest bone in human body. For example, Galen wrote that the sternum has seven segments, but Vesalius found it has three segments. He studied many details of human anatomy and found that Galen made some anatomical mistakes. ![]() When he moved to Italy and entered the University of Padua, he began dissecting human bodies. Andreas Vesalius (1514–1564), a Flemish anatomist, was at first a "Galenist" at the University of Paris. ![]()

In fact, it has become the kind of lazy, hackneyed, cliché word of the moment that Orwell himself despised. ![]() But either way, it’s Orwell’s time to shine again.Īnd so “Orwellian” has become the word of the moment. This time, it appears to be because outraged conservatives fear that private corporations have begun to censor public speech. Last time 1984 returned to the bestseller list, it was because terrified liberals feared the Trump administration would drive us straight into the dystopian horrors of 1984, in which Big Brother is always watching, forcing his subjects to believe that 2 + 2 = 5 if he says it does. responded to his father’s ban from Twitter with the lament that “We are living Orwell’s 1984,” 1984 once again flew up Amazon’s bestseller list, briefly sitting at No. And in the wake of January’s Capitol riot, as Senator Josh Hawley decried his book cancellation as “Orwellian” and Donald Trump Jr. When Trump took office in 2017, sales of George Orwell’s dystopian classic went up by 9,500 percent. It’s possible Donald Trump’s greatest talent is driving people to buy copies of 1984. ![]() 5/27/2023 0 Comments Small things like these keegan![]() This is free download Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan complete book soft copy. To be more charitable still: A movie in which Johnson falls on her face, upends a gravy boat over her head and climbs the stairs grumpily nursing a bottle of wine might be a source of some theoretical amusement. ![]() No movie that finds Dakota Johnson modeling high-waisted frocks against the Lyme Regis seawall or the lush Somersetshire countryside could be called a complete waste of time. Like even the lousiest Regency-era frippery, it has its intermittent pleasures, most of them visual. To clarify the obvious - something the movie under review today has no problem doing - the “A” excerpts are from Jane Austen’s magnificent novel “Persuasion.” The “B” excerpts are from the movie, which I suppose you could also call “Persuasion,” insofar as it appears to have lifted sentences from the novel and fed them through some kind of Instagram-filtering, catchphrase-generating, text-summarizing idiot bot. ![]() 5/27/2023 0 Comments Otherland by tad williams![]() ![]() I was on a real fantasy fix back then and this science fiction series was a little too far outside my zone, it was seven pounds for the first (admittedly very thick) book and my budget couldn’t stretch that far! Thank the Book Gods for birthdays, that’s all I have to say. It was about ten years ago and I had pretty much everything that Tad had written fantasy wise, I wasn’t sure whether to get started on the new ‘Otherland’ series that I had noticed in the bookshop. ![]() My face has gone red just typing this but it’s true. 5/27/2023 0 Comments Check please by ngozi ukazu![]() ![]() Even if you don’t like hockey, you will find yourself falling for this book. But that’s where Check, Please! is different. ![]() Like many fans of this series, I never knew I could like hockey so much. I couldn’t sing enough praises about this book. It has adorable romantic elements, tons of sports, charming graphics, and fantastic characters. I was especially good about respecting my blogging schedule, despite all my shiny BEA arcs, but I made a special exception for Check, Please! How could I not? I didn’t know if this book would be for me, but boy was I wrong. And then, there is Jack-our very attractive but moody captain. It’s nothing like co-ed club hockey back in Georgia! First of all? There’s checking. I may be a former junior figure skating champion, vlogger extraordinaire, and very talented amateur pâtissier, but being a freshman on the Samwell University hockey team is a whole new challenge. Check, Please! is just another in the line of wonderful comics I’ve read. It’s been amazing, and has made me so happy. I have been on a graphic novel kick recently. ![]() 5/27/2023 0 Comments Infamous by lex croucher![]() ![]() They’re twenty-year-old women, which means it’s time to enter the marriage mart – at least for Rose, who faces the possibility of marriage with equanimity rather than enthusiasm (and her suitor is not that bad of a fellow). If you’ve read – or even just heard about – Reputation, you’ll probably know whether or not Lex Croucher’s latest, Regency-ish New Adult historical will please your older teen. ![]() |
